How to connect Chromecast

Google Chromecast

You’ve heard about the ability to stream audio/video content from a device to your TV in a really simple way. You got informed and discovered the existence of Google Chromecast . You purchased this technological object and now you wonder if those rumors that confirmed immediate and quick installation are true: in reality they are! Chromecast is a device that requires very few installation and configuration steps: you will be truly amazed when, shortly, I will show you the installation procedure.

In addition to having information on its configuration, would you also like to know how to enjoy its full potential? I am ready to answer all your questions and I will do so in this tutorial: you should in fact know that Chromecast is a device that generally uses a proprietary technology, called Google Cast, which allows you to receive multimedia content from other devices. These can be of any type, such as music from Spotify or YouTube, films and TV series from sites and apps such as Netflix or simple screenshots of your computer, such as a page you are browsing. The only requirement is that the television has an HDMI input: the contents will be transmitted with the help of the home network.

During this tutorial I will therefore explain how to connect Chromecast so that you can use your smartphone or tablet or your PC to broadcast all the content you want on your TV. After this brief introduction, let’s not waste any more time and immediately start getting to the heart of the topic. I wish you a good read!

Initial Chromecast setup

To get started, let’s see how to configure Chromecast on a television or monitor, so that you can use it to broadcast content from your computer, smartphone or tablet.

How to connect Chromecast to TV

How to connect Chromecast to TV

First, proceed with the physical connection of the Chromecast to the television: to begin, open the package, extract the Chromecast and connect it to one of the free HDMI ports on the television, using the dedicated connector. Next, take the USB cable that came with your device and connect the mini-USB/USB-C end directly to the Chromecast.

Now, take the power supply from the sales package, connect it to the Chromecast via the USB cable and connect the power plug to a free input; if you have a classic Chromecast (therefore not ultra or equipped with Google TV), you can also power it via USB directly from the TV, connecting it to one of the free USB ports, if present.

In any case, once you have physically connected Chromecast to the television, turn the latter on and set it to the correct HDMI source , by pressing the SOURCE/SRC button on the remote control several times , or using the appropriate function available in the Home menu of the device: once Once the correct source has been selected, you should find yourself in front of the Chromecast welcome screen, which invites you to download the Google Home app .

If you have connected Chromecast to a monitor, selecting the source should not be necessary, as the screen should automatically set to the correct channel. If not, locate the SRC/Input button on the hard part of the screen and press it repeatedly until you see the device’s welcome screen appear.

If you have a Chromecast with Google TV and you see the Start pairing message appear , take the device’s remote control , press and hold the Back and Home buttons until the light starts flashing, which indicates that the pairing phase with the remote control has begun. Subsequently, select the language you want to use and proceed with configuring the device, as I am about to explain in the next step of this guide.

How to connect Chromecast

Once you have completed the connection phase, switch to your smartphone/tablet and, if you have not already done so, install the Google Home app , available on the Google Play Store and on the Apple App Store , following the procedure provided by your device . Once the installation is complete, open the application obtained, tap the Get started button and, when prompted, select the Google account with which to configure Chromecast and tap the OK button .

If there is no Google account on your device, you will be asked to enter the credentials of the profile you intend to use; if, however, you do not want to configure Chromecast with the profile already present, tap the Use another account button and enter the credentials of the account you are interested in, when requested.

Once you have completed accessing the application, tap the Next button and respond affirmatively to the messages that appear subsequently, to grant the permissions necessary for the correct functioning of Home (e.g. access to Bluetooth, nearby devices, access services location and so on). Once you have passed this step, tap the Next button and follow the procedure suggested on the screen, to proceed with the creation of a new virtual home .

At this point, Home should automatically start searching for devices configured for first access; if this does not happen, tap the Devices tab of the app, press the Add button and tap the New device option , resident in the new screen that opens. Once this is done, press on the virtual home to which you want to add the device, tap the Next button and wait for the Chromecast detected screen to appear , a sign that the app has been able to recognize the multimedia device.

We’re almost there: now press the Yes button at the bottom right, wait for the pairing phase to be completed and check that the code displayed on the smartphone display and the one visible on the TV/screen to which Chromecast is connected match. If so, tap the Yes button , choose whether to automatically share reports and statistics on the use of the device with Google by pressing the appropriate button, then select a room for the device and press the Next button .

At this point, select the Wi-Fi network with which to configure the device, press the Next button and enter the network key associated with the connection in the appropriate field. If you wish, place a check mark next to the option Remember the password for this Wi-Fi network to configure other devices in the future , to ensure that the app is able to enter it automatically if you need to configure other devices compatible.

Finally, tap the Connect button and wait patiently for Chromecast to connect to the chosen wireless network: within a few minutes, you should see a message indicating successful connection on the phone/tablet screen and, on the TV, the wording You’re almost done should appear . Now, if you want to customize your experience with the Google assistant, press the Next button and follow the wizard that appears on the screen (it is not mandatory); otherwise, tap the Not now , Continue and Ignore buttons , to exit the configuration panel: Chromecast is now ready to use!

If, however, you do not have a wireless network connection and you are looking for some more information on how to connect Chromecast to a hotspot , know that it is slightly more complex but equally feasible: you will have to activate the hotspot on your main device and use a second smartphone/tablet, also connected to the hotspot, to configure the Google dongle.

Alternatively, if you have a Chromecast with Google TV, you will have to carry out the configuration directly from the remote control and connect to the mobile phone’s hotspot, without using – at least at the beginning – the Google Home application: to do this, when the instructions for configuration with Google Home, you will need to use the remote control to select the Configure on TV item , press the central button on the d-pad and follow the on-screen instructions to connect the device to the wireless network and associate it with your Google account . For further information, take a look at the guide in which I explain how to use Chromecast without Wi-Fi ..

How to connect Chromecast to PC

How to connect Chromecast to PC

Once Chromecast is properly set up, you can use it to cast both your computer screen and a single browser tab. This operation can be done from both Windows and macOS, but under two specific conditions: first of all, the computer must be connected to the same router to which Chromecast is connected (via cable or Wi-Fi, it makes no difference); secondly, it is possible to start streaming content only using the Google Chrome browser : if you don’t already have it, you can install it by following the instructions I have provided in this guide.

Once you have downloaded the above software, launch it and, if you intend to transmit content from the Web, connect to the website you are interested in as you would usually do; this operation is not necessary if you intend to broadcast the entire screen.

Subsequently, click on the  button at the top, select the Transmit… item from the menu that opens and use the Sources drop-down menu , located in the lower left corner of the panel that opens, to indicate whether to transmit the currently active card , or whether to broadcast the desktop . Finally, press on the name of the Chromecast device to which you want to direct the contents and wait a few moments for the selected content to be transmitted directly to the TV screen or to the external monitor.

How to connect Chromecast to PC

If you’re using the macOS operating system , you can only start casting your entire desktop after giving Chrome permission to record your screen – typically, the operating system should ask you to do this the first time you try to cast your screen to Chromecast but if not, you can proceed manually.

As? I’ll explain it to you right away. First of all, open the System Settings by clicking on the gear symbol resident in the Dock, or on the dedicated item available in the Apple menu ; once there, click on the Privacy and security item , then on the Screen recording option and locate, in the list that appears, the entry relating to Google Chrome ; finally, move the switch located next to it from OFF to ON and restart Chrome by pressing the Exit and reopen button . From now on, you should be able to cast the macOS Desktop without any problems.

If you do not see any entry relating to Chrome in the Screen Recording window , click on the [+] button at the bottom, type your computer’s administration password and double-click on the Google Chrome entry , which should appear in the next panel.

Note : Some web players, such as those from YouTube, Netflix and other popular video services, are natively compatible with Chromecast when accessed from the Google Chrome browser. In this case, you can start transmitting content by pressing on the wave screen icon , located in the player box, and then selecting the name of Chromecast from the list that appears.

How to connect Chromecast

Can’t wait to use Chromecast to watch, on a larger screen, the contents you usually access from your smartphone? Nothing simpler! You should know, in fact, that most of the streaming applications – and not only – available on the market are natively compatible with Chromecast. Before proceeding, make sure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast.

To start broadcasting content, open it in the application you want, tap on the broadcast symbol (which generally has the shape of a screen or a triangle with waves ) and tap on the Chromecast name , located in the panel which opens, to transmit the contents to the Google device. Once the connection is established, you can use the phone as a remote control to control audio/video playback, to skip to the next content, and so on.

The applications compatible with Chromecast, available for both Android and iPhone/iPad, are truly numerous: YouTube/YouTube Music , Spotify , Netflix , Disney+ , RaiPlay , NOW , DAZN , Infinity , Amazon Prime Video , VLC and Google Photos , just for get some “important” names. In any case, to delve deeper into the topic, I invite you to read my guide to Chromecast applications, full of useful information on the subject.

However, if the application you are interested in is not compatible with “direct” transmission on Chromecast, you can choose to also play the entire content of the mobile phone screen on the Google dongle: below you will find an explanation of how to proceed on Android, iPhone and iPads .

How to connect Chromecast to Android

How to connect Chromecast to your phone

On phones powered by the “green robot” operating system, playing the screen directly on Chromecast is child’s play: to do this, launch the Google Home app , tap on the Devices tab and press on the name of the Chromecast device towards the which one you want to stream the contents to access its management screen.

At this point, tap on the Transmit screen button and then press on the item of the same name to establish the connection. In some cases, you may need to authorize the app to record/broadcast the screen by responding affirmatively to the warning that appears on the screen: for example, on Xiaomi devices , the button to press is called Start now.

To stop the broadcast, call up the Android notification area , expand the screen broadcast message and tap the Disconnect item ; alternatively, reopen the Google Home app , tap the Devices tab and, after selecting the Chromecast device in use, press the Stop mirroring button to stop the connection.

How to connect Chromecast to iPhone

How to connect Chromecast to iPhone

On iPhone , however, there is no native method to cast the contents of the entire screen to Chromecast. However, you can meet this need by using the Screen Duplicate/Replica application : it allows you to replicate the content of the iPhone (and iPad) screen on devices that are not directly compatible with iOS/iPadOS; like Chromecast – precisely – and Miracast receivers, taking advantage of the screen recording function of the operating systems.

Basically, Screen Mirroring is a free application, however it is possible to subscribe to a paid plan to unlock additional functions (such as choosing the delay, mode and quality of transmission) and eliminate in-app advertising banners. Replica allows you to obtain completely appreciable results, albeit with a slight transmission delay compared to what can be done with Android.

That said, after downloading the application to your phone, open it and tap the Continue button ; subsequently, press the Grant Authorization button and tap the Allow item to grant the necessary permissions for the connection; then touch the Allow notifications button and indicate whether to authorize the app to send push notifications or not, by acting on the dedicated item.

Now, if you want to subscribe to the Premium plan , tap the Continue button and complete the transaction, following the instructions you see on the screen; otherwise, if you want to try the Premium features at no cost for 3 days (after which the subscription will be activated automatically, unless you cancel it), place the check mark next to the Not sure yet? option. Activate the free trial and tap the Continue button . If, however, you want to continue with the basic version of the app, tap the symbol (X) at the top right.

In any case, once you reach the main screen of the app, you should see the list of all the devices ready to accept connections; finally, press on the name of Chromecast and then on the Screen Mirroring box to start transmitting images. I would like to point out that, again through the same window, you can also send video content from the Web, transmit photos/videos, reproduce everything that is framed by the camera or share drawings and voice notes by pressing the dedicated button. Once you have made your choice, all you have to do is press on the Start broadcast item to start streaming the content. In case of doubts or problems, take a look at my guide on how to connect iPhone to Chromecast , full of useful information in this regard.
