Preliminary information

Before going into the details of the procedure on how to install YouTube on PC , I think you may be interested in knowing more about this possibility.

Well, as you well know if you’ve already researched a bit on the topic, unfortunately there isn’t yet an official YouTube application for computers (the one on the Microsoft Store only works on Xbox consoles). However, this does not mean that it is not possible to “install” YouTube on PC.

In fact, at the beginning of 2021, Google released the official YouTube PWA . What is it about? I’ll explain it to you right away: PWA stands for Progressive Web App and, in simple terms, these are installable versions of websites in which developers can also add interesting additional features, including support for offline content.

Unfortunately this is not the case with YouTube, as the YouTube PWA does not yet allow you to download videos offline, even if you are a YouTube Premium subscriber , but this may change in the future.

That said, without going into too much technicality, using the PWA you can make the YouTube icon appear on the desktop and use the famous video portal as a sort of stand-alone application, independent of the web browser.

The only requirement to access this possibility is to use the Google Chrome browser or another browser based on the same engine, given that the Mountain View company has released the PWA only for the latter.

How to install YouTube on PC

Now that you know the general situation, I would say that the time has come to take action and install YouTube on PC, or on Mac (the procedure is also valid for macOS). Below you will find all the relevant information.

YouTube PWA

YouTube PWA installed Windows 10

The only solution to actually install YouTube on your computer is to use the PWA (Progressive Web App) . To use the latter, you must first download and install the Google Chrome browser .

To proceed, connect to the official website and press the Download Chrome button . By doing so, you will get the installation file. Then, if you use Windows , launch the .exe file obtained, press the Yes button and wait for the download and installation to complete. If you use a Mac , however, just extract Chrome from the .dmg package obtained in the Mac Applications folder . If you have any doubts about the procedure, you can refer to my tutorial on how to install Chrome on a PC .

At this point, once the browser has started automatically, it’s all very simple: just reach the official YouTube portal and press the + icon at the top right, inside the URL bar .

By doing so, a window will open asking you to install the YouTube app: just click on the Install button and you’re done. In a few seconds you will find yourself with the application icon on the desktop (or in the Launchpad , if you use a Mac) and with the PWA at your disposal.

Everything works similarly to the Google platform website: you can log in and access videos in exactly the same way. All you have to do is use YouTube as usual, but this time you have a window dedicated to it, just like any stand-alone program.

The only things you need to know is that at the top left there is the button to reload the page , while the three dots icon located at the top right is used to access the settings and other features.

More precisely, from here you can press on the Uninstall YouTube item to remove the app, as well as use the classic functions also present on Chrome, from zoom to transmission of the video stream, including the possibility of putting the PWA in full screen . If you’re not very familiar with the platform, you might be interested in taking a look at my guide on how YouTube works .

In short, now you know everything there is to know about YouTube’s Progressive Web App. In case you are unable to install it on your computer, you could try updating Chrome and Windows / macOS to the latest version. If, however, you want to use another browser or are looking for an alternative solution to the PWA, read the next chapter.

Alternative solutions

Microsoft Edge taskbar shortcuts

How do you say? Don’t want to use Google Chrome and are looking for alternative solutions to have the YouTube icon on the desktop or in the macOS Launchpad? No problem: I’ll immediately explain what you can do.

In this regard, I recommend you use Microsoft Edge , the default browser of Windows 10 and also available for macOS (I am referring to its updated version , based on Chromium, i.e. the same engine as Chrome). Edge allows you to both install PWAs and create links to a site on the Windows taskbar or in the macOS Finder.

To proceed, open Microsoft Edge and connect to the official YouTube website . At this point, click on the three dots icon , located at the top right and, if you want to install the YouTube PWA, go to the App menu > Install YouTube and confirm.

If, however, you want to add a shortcut to YouTube to the Windows taskbar or to the macOS Finder, go to the More Tools > Pin to Taskbar/Add to Finder menu .

After that, just click the Add button and the YouTube icon will appear in the Windows taskbar or in the macOS Finder . By tapping on the latter, you can quickly open the YouTube website via Microsoft Edge .

Add YouTube taskbar Windows 10

In the latter case it is not a real application, but rather a simple connection . However, it could be useful in some contexts and act as a “replacement” for the PWA.

In fact, other browsers, including those that don’t support PWAs, also allow you to create simple links to websites: to learn more, you can refer to my guide on how to create a web page link .

For the rest, I strongly advise you to avoid unofficial YouTube clients made by third parties (therefore not by Google), as there could be problems in terms of privacy , especially when it comes to logging in with your Google account. This applies to both PCs and smartphones and tablets. Then don’t tell me I didn’t warn you!
