The 11 most livable cities in the world in 2023. Four are in Europe

They offer first-level services, from education to health. They have quality infrastructures, but also a varied cultural offering and demonstrate scrupulous attention to the environment. Here are the urban excellences of the planet

The most livable cities in the world are a synthesis of seriousness and escape , of concreteness and lightness. They satisfy the primary needs, the great priorities of contemporary man: they guarantee him adequate infrastructure, access to excellent education and healthcare , but also a varied and well-curated cultural offer, partly linked to entertainment. All held together by one last fundamental factor: stability . That is, that these conditions are not fluctuating, nor temporary, but long-lasting and consolidated.

Compiling the special ranking, giving votes to the best urban centers on the planet , is the Economist Intelligence Unit , the study and research company linked to the famous magazine. For accuracy, scruple and level of analysis, it is considered the most reliable . The global reference.

In the top 10 there is a good European presence , with four names in the ranking, two in the top places. Nothing sensational, they are exactly the same ones at the top last year : Vienna , which is a regular, and Copenhagen .

The 11 most livable cities in the world in 2023. Four are in Europe

Europe , in general, is doing well, it is the most represented continent In particular thanks to Switzerland , which takes sixth and seventh place with Zurich and Geneva . In reality, more than a reason for celebration, it is a partial consolation , since Frankfurt and Amsterdam , among the protagonists of 2022, no longer shine as they once did, supplanted by Melbourne and Sydney.

As for the other names of the most livable cities in the world , none are in the United States, but three are located in nearby Canada : Vancouver , Calgary and Toronto . Then, closing the ranking with the same score, are Osaka in Japan and Auckland in New Zealand. So the 10 names actually become 11.

Le 11 città più vivibili al mondo nel 2023. Quattro sono in Europa

Just out of curiosity, before delving into the best, we can take a look at the worst: at the bottom of the ranking of the centers scrutinized , in 173rd place is Damascus in Syria; Tripoli in Libya, Algiers in Algeria, Lagos in Nigeria do a little better. Among the last 10 we see a European one, Kiev , for reasons that, unfortunately, are easy to understand.

In the gallery below, an in-depth look from the top down. Almost a temptation : someone might want to move to one of these cities, where being wonderful is the rule.

  • Beautiful Karlskirche Church. Vienna
nick18031/22ViennaWe limit ourselves to translating the Economist ‘s motivation which earned it the gold medal: «A winning combination of stability, good culture and entertainment, reliable infrastructure and exemplary educational and health services». Better than this…

Manchan2/22The final score is 98.4. Stability, health and educational services and infrastructure even get the highest marks: 100 out of 100. Only the culture and environment item is weaker, paradoxically the lowest among the first six names in the ranking (with 93.5 points out of 100). From that point of view, more could be done.

Alexander Spatari3/22CopenhagenIt combines quiet and excitement, security with some hippie deviations like Christiania, a neighborhood that professes freedom from self-government. The great merit is certainly the cultural openness, tolerance, which is combined with a widespread sense of well-being.
  • Il punteggio finale è 98 dunque solo quattro decimi meno di Vienna. Lofferta culturale è su uno standard più elevato ma...
Alexander Spatari4/22The final score is 98, therefore only four tenths less than Vienna. The cultural offer is on a higher standard (95.4) but healthcare does not reach the maximum, stopping at 95.8. Anyway, a very high mark.

Eric Yang6/22The score is 97.7. Compared to the first two places, stability matters here: it’s worth 95 out of 100, but it’s not a failure at all. Melbourne will have to prove that it deserves a lot of trust.

Michael Dunning7/22SydneyThe same applies to Melbourne, after all the two Australian twins are closely behind each other: 97.4 for the city with one of the most famous opera houses in the world, again 95 the score for stability.

taranchic11/22ZurichWe return to Europe, to impeccable Switzerland, for what becomes a rebound with Canada (spoiler: Calgary is immediately after). This city intelligently exploits its connection with water: in some points the river resembles Venice, immediately after there is a lake, both suitable for swimming and very popular in summer.

Silvan Bachmann12/22Public transport is widespread and works very well. Of course, the cost of living is what it is, but the salaries are adequate to support it. The final score is 97.1: also in this case the highlights are the health and training services, a little less the infrastructure.

joe daniel price13/22CalgaryUnlike Vancouver, and Toronto which we will meet again shortly, it is perhaps the least known destination of the entire ranking. With just over 1 million inhabitants, a non-stifling skyline, generous green spaces, accents of western culture, it ranges between typical and cosmopolitan suggestions.

John Elk III14/22For the first time we fall below the threshold of 97 out of 100, stopping at 96.8. But it is the composition of the score that is interesting: all items, from education to infrastructure, are at maximum. Only the environment is significantly deficient, at least in comparison with the other excellences in the ranking: it does not go beyond 87.3. It may be due to the strong presence of “oil and gas” factories, which have their impact.

StockByM15/22GenevaThe other city in Switzerland, the last European one. You immediately think of the lake, with its powerful jet of water; to watches, chocolate, luxury hotels and other, yet happy, stereotypes. However, an industrious slowness and an acceptable pedestrian and cycle size must also be underlined. Boasts that other centers of the Old Continent can only dream of.

pawel.gaul16/22It is a tie with Calgary, here too the score is 96.8. Stability is not like the Canadian city (here 95, there 100), but the environment and culture are rated very well and are worth sharing seventh place (here 94.9 versus 87.3).
