One of the most searched questions online is “Who invented Google?”. The reason? Simple, the famous search engine is now synonymous with the Internet, and has entered our lives in a predominant way. Google was born in 1997  from the revolutionary mind of two students from Stanford University:  Larry Page  and  Sergey Brin. Larry, the son of a university computer science professor and a programming teacher, received various IT stimuli during his childhood.

Sergey grew up in Moscow and came to the United States at the age of 6 with his parents, two mathematicians. He will never deny the choice to abandon Russia in the most complicated period of the Cold War. From an early age he dreamed of becoming an astronomer and attended Mathematics and Computer Science at Stanford, where the historic meeting with his friend Larry took place.

Legend has it that Larry Page and Sergey Brin met in 1996 in San Francisco, during a guided tour organized for new students. Larry was a freshman while Sergey, one of the brightest and youngest students, led the tour. It was Larry himself who had the brilliant idea behind Google, but let’s start with order.

Search engines in the second half of the 1990s were not as efficient as they are today and the two students were of the opinion that they could easily do better. Yahoo!, Altavista  and the engines of the time based their functioning on the  occurrence of the keyword  on the page: for example by searching for  “ball”,  the engines sorted the pages containing the word “ball” several times in the search results  . With these methods the  quality  of the contents was  unsatisfactory, while the  user’s demand  was almost  never satisfied.  Something needed to be done, and quickly.

For  “whoever invented Google”,  the main objective was to provide the most correct and comprehensive answers for the user. At the basis of their revolutionary theory is a  Search Engine  based on the mathematical analysis  of web pages and the  relationships between sites.  The very simple idea starts from the consideration that  the usefulness or relevance  of a web page was given by the  number of times it was “mentioned” by other sites through a link (backlink).

Organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful .

This is the primary objective of those who invented Google, an innovative and very audacious project for its time.

The difficult beginning of whoever invented Google

At the beginning the success was enormous. Google’s traffic reached such high levels that it nearly blew up Stanford University’s entire computer network. Despite everything,  Google’s story risked ending soon!  Larry Page and Sergey Brin realized they didn’t have enough money to further develop their creation. They tried to sell their product directly to competitors, Yahoo! understood, without achieving success. Nobody wanted to invest in yet another engine,  despite the dot.com boom. The two students thus decided to abandon the University and focus only on their creation.

Sergey and Larry turned to a Stanford professor, David Cheriton who worked with  Andy Bechtolsheim,  a well-known Silicon Valley investor. Bechtolsheim himself decided to  invest 100,000 dollars in Google  and shortly thereafter many noticed the revolution. The rest is history.

Overture and Adwords: the Internet Economy is born

Google was a great product but investors were demanding  profits.  The most obvious solution was to insert  advertisements  like the competitors. However, Larry Page and Sergey Brin wanted to make sense of the ads without filling the engine with banners. The solution came by copying a small company,  Bill Gross  ‘s  Idealab .

Gross was the first to understand that  when a user types a keyword he is not only expressing his interests, but often also indicating what he would like to buy.  The entrepreneur thought he could  sell the keywords to advertisers,  as it worked for the Yellow Pages. In 1998 he launched  Overture,  a site based on keywords and sponsored links, and it was an immediate success.

Google, in the same period, launched  Adwords,  very similar to Overture. Bill Gross denounced the plagiarism and later resolved it by settling with Larry Page and Sergey Brin to take shares of Google.

Whoever invented Google obviously had great intuition. Gross’ idea was revisited and improved, especially  by separating advertisements from organic  search results. Google had not only paved the way for its own commercial success, but had also laid the foundation for the  advertising market  by creating the  Internet Economy.
