Why is saffron so expensive?

Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world with one pound costing between $500 to even $5,000 and that’s a lot for a spice. No, really, think about it. Spice is something you put on food in order ti make it taste better or enhance it in some way so you would expect that the food itself is what would cost the most but no it’s actually the saffron.

Why is saffron so costly?

Apparently is very labor intensive to try to harvest it and when the labor cost are high you can expect the price of the item to be up there as well.

Saffron is harvested by hand by the crocus sativus flower commonly known as the saffron crocus. Now interesting enough the use of saffron began in greece. It was used to boost the person’s health in certain ways which included improving one’s memory. Sometimes used to make someone’s mood better. Now we know it is a spice that can do a lot more than just that.

Benefits of saffron

In fact saffron is very healthy and beneficial to consume. For example is loaded with antioxidants and that means it can cleans your body. The greeks noticed it can also improve your mood and some even claim that it will help with depression as well.

If that is not enough for you then saffron has also properties that can help you to fight cancer. Obviously that’s difficult to prove but a lot of people do get it in hopes of doing just that.

Aside from all that there are a lot more potencial benefits to saffron; and while the cost may be high it mihìght just be something that you will consider trying out if the money rolls in for you.
