Women picking saffron

Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world with one pound costing between $500 to even $5,000 and that’s a lot for a spice. No, really, think about it. Spice is something you put on food in order ti make it taste better or enhance it in some way so you would expect that the food itself is what would cost the most but no it’s actually the saffron.

Why is saffron so costly?

Apparently is very labor intensive to try to harvest it and when the labor cost are high you can expect the price of the item to be up there as well.

Saffron is harvested by hand by the crocus sativus flower commonly known as the saffron crocus. Now interesting enough the use of saffron began in greece. It was used to boost the person’s health in certain ways which included improving one’s memory. Sometimes used to make someone’s mood better.
